Ethel and Norman Thayer, arrive to spend another summer at their cottage on a lake called Golden Pond. Upon arrival Ethel is elated when the loons on the lake "welcoming them home." They are visited by daughter Chelsea, who is somewhat estranged from her curmudgeon of a father. Chelsea introduces her parents to her fiancé Bill and his teenage son Billy. Billy ends up staying with Ethel and Normal while his Dad and Chelsea go away on a trip. The wonderful story unfolds from here of a newly found childhood for Billy Jr. and an old man coming to terms with his age.
